Nuclear Aircraft Carriers (CVN
A capital ship designed to project the power of US combat potential at sea or ashore via
versatile aircraft. Mission areas include STW, AAW, IW, SUW, and EW. They employ the
Ship’s Self Defense System (SSDS). It serves as the primary Command and Control (C2)
platform for Carrier Strike Groups (CSGs)

NIMITZ Class (CVN 68-77)
Armament: Multiple NSSM, ESSM, RAM, and
CIWS mounts.
Propulsion: Two nuclear reactors providing
energy for a steam plant powering four fixed
pitch propellers.
Aircraft: 60+

FORD Class (CVN 78 and higher)
Armament: ESSM, RAM, and CIWS
Propulsion: Two nuclear reactors providing
energy for a steam plant powering four fixed
pitch propellers.
Aircraft: 75+

Guided Missile Cruisers (CG)
The TICONDEROGA (CG-47) class cruisers are multi-mission capable surface combatants, utilizing the Aegis Weapon System (AWS), that primarily serve as the Air and Missile Defense Commander (AMDC) for the Carrier Strike Group (CSG) but can also support amphibious groups or operate independently. Mission areas include AAW, SUW, USW, STW, BMD (and MIO on a limited number of hulls).

Mk-41 VLS (RIM-67 SM-2, RIM-161 SM-3 (BMD capable ships), RIM-174 SM-
6, RIM-162 ESSM, RUM-139 ASROC, RGM-109 TLAM), RGM-84 Harpoon, two Mk-45/54
5” caliber guns (fore & aft), two SVTT, two Mk-15 CIWS, two Mk-38 25mm Machine guns
and various interchangeable .50 caliber or 7.62 caliber machine gun mounts.
