what are the 4 advantages of the legislative process
Democratic
Consultation
Detailed Debate
Full reform
Expand on ‘democratic’
It allows elected representatives to give effect to election manifesto commitments.
House of Commons is elected every 5 years and has the upper hand in any dispute with the House of Lords (Parliament Acts 1911 and 1949).
Expand on ‘consultation’
Law can be made after detailed inquiry or a report from the Law Commission.
Wide consultation is possible before Parliament makes changes to the law e.g the use of Green and White papers allows consultation with interested bodies and objections and/or amendments to be made to proposed new laws to make them more effective.
Expand on ‘full reform’
Parliament can reform and consolidate many areas of law in a single Act (Consumer Rights Act 2015) as well as repealing numerous obsolete Acts by working with the Law Commission and other law reform bodies.
Expand on ‘detailed debate’
The House of Commons is very thorough and provides ample opportunity for debate, challenge and scrutiny.
The House of Lords then provide a very expert and thorough revising chamber.
