what are the classification of bases?
protective bases - when remaining dentin is very thin
thermal insulating bases - placed under metallic restorations
blocking-out bases - to build up floor walls for indirect restorations
what are the types of bases?
zin oxide-eugenol
zinc phosphate cement
polycarboxylate cement
glass ionomer cement (conventional or RMGI)
purpose of bases
provide thermal protection
reduce stress between restoration and pulp
replace lost dentin for proper restoration support
may offer antibacterial effects of fluoride release
properties of bases
must be strong enough to resist forces during restoration
biocompatible
should not interfere with restorative material setting
easy to place and shape
should be non toxic to pulp
instruments and technique of bases
mixed on a mixing pad or glass slab
carried with base placement instrument
smoothed and adapted to cavity floor
in deeper areas, placed in layers if necessary
