weather
the condition of Earth's atmosphere at a particular time and place

temperature
the measure of the amount of thermal energy in the atmosphere

precipitation
when any form of water (rain or snow or hail or sleet or mist) falls to Earth

rain
drops of fresh water that fall as precipitation from clouds

hail
ice pellets falling from clouds when there are strong rising air currents

sleet
partially melted snow (or a mixture of rain and snow)

snow
precipitation falling from clouds in the form of ice crystals

prediction
scientific reasoning based on an observation
forecast
a prediction about how something (as the weather) will develop

cumulus clouds
fluffy and white with flat bottoms. They usually indicate fair weather.

nimbus clouds
dark gray rain clouds

cumulonimbus clouds
large, fluffy, dark on the bottom. They may produce thunderstorms.

stratus clouds
smooth, gray clouds that cover the whole sky (block out direct sunlight). Light rain and drizzle can happen.

cirrus clouds
feathery clouds. fair weather. often indicate that rain or snow will fall soon.

thunderstorm
a short, heavy storm that consists of rain, strong winds, lightning, and thunder

tornado
a powerful funnel-shaped column of spiraling air that forms over land

hurricane
a large, powerful windstorm that forms over warm ocean waters

high air pressure
occurs when the air pressure is higher than areas around it; usually means cooler temperatures and drier weather

low air pressure
occurs when the air pressure is lower than areas around it; usually means warmer temperatures and wet weather
warm front
is formed when a warm air mass pushes into a cold air mass, the boundary where a warm air mass moves over a cold air mass

cold front
when a cold air mass pushes under a warm air mass

air mass
a huge body of air that has similar temperature, humidity, and air pressure

humidity
the amount of moisture in the air

atmospheric conditions
temperature, precipitation, wind, humidity, air pressure
weather pattern
Weather that happens over and over again over a certain period of time
weather map
A map that shows data about recent weather conditions across a large area

meteorologist
A scientist who studies weather

thermometer
measures the temperature of the air

barometer
measures air pressure

anemometer
measures wind speed

rain gauge
measures the amount of precipitation

air pressure
due to the weight of the air and is determined by several factors, including the temperature of the air

front
the boundary between air masses of different temperature and humidity
