Situational Couple Violence
Relationship in which situations or arguments between partners escalate into physical violence because one or both partners has poor ability to control anger
Situational Couple Violence Factors
-Results from arguments between partners that escalate into physical violence
- Involves violence which is triggered by a stressor
- Involves poor anger control by one or both partners
- Can involve frequent and severe violence
- BUT generally ends when the couple separates
Domestic Violence- Coercive Control
A pattern of abusive behavior in an intimate relationship designed to gain and maintain power and control
Domestic Violence- Coercive Control Factors
- People who use tactics on Power and Control Wheel that work for them- nonviolent tactics may be effective without use of violence especially in relationships that include a history of domestic violence
- Abusive behaviors can happen at any time
- Stressors (i.e. mental health or substance abuse issues) may increase frequency and severity of DV but stressors do not cause DV
- Control tactics make ending relationship exponentially more difficult
- Leaving an abusive partner often leads them to escalate abusive behavior is an attempt to regain control= increase in danger for survivor

Often have extensive criminal records including violent offenses v. non-family victim
