periodic table
an arrangement of elements in which the elements are separated into groups based on a set of repeating properties

Periods
Horizontal rows on the periodic table

groups/families
Vertical columns on the periodic table

atomic number
the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom

atomic mass
The average mass of all the isotopes of an element. The number of protons and neutrons added together.

atomic symbol
A one or two letter abbreviation for an element

Protons
positively charged subatomic particles found in an atom's nucleus

Neutrons
the particles of the nucleus that have no charge

Electron
A subatomic particle that has a negative charge found outside of an atom's nucleus

Bohr Model
model of an atom that shows electrons in circular orbits around the nucleus

valence electrons
Electrons on the outermost energy level of an atom

valence shell
The outermost energy shell of an atom, containing the valence electrons involved in the chemical reactions of that atom.

electron cloud
a region around the nucleus of an atom where electrons are likely to be found

energy level
a region of an atom in which electrons of the same energy are likely to be found
