Gas Exchange
The interchange of O2 and CO2 between an organism and its environment.
Breathing
The first phase of gas exchange, involving the intake of O2 and expulsion of CO2.
Transport of Gases
The movement of gases by the circulatory system to and from body cells.
Cellular Respiration
A metabolic process that consumes O2 and produces CO2.
Countercurrent Exchange
A mechanism in gills where water and blood flow in opposite directions to enhance gas exchange.
Tracheal System
A respiratory system in insects that delivers O2 directly to cells through a network of tubes.
Alveoli
Tiny air sacs in the lungs where gas exchange occurs, characterized by a high surface area.
Hemoglobin
A protein in red blood cells that transports O2 and CO2 and buffers blood.
Surfactants
Specialized secretions in alveoli that prevent the moist surfaces from sticking together.
Negative Pressure Breathing
A method of ventilation where air is pulled into the lungs due to a decrease in pressure.
