What is K-tape?
Tape that was developed to facilitate the body’s natural healing process through neuromodulation, altering the signal the nervous system sends to the muscles.
What does it do?
It doesn’t restrict movement, instead it’s elasticity mimics skin properties allowing for natural movement.
How long can it be worn for?
3-5 days
What does it do when used for facilitation?
It enhances muscle activity for a weak or atrophied muscle, helping with muscle tone and motor control during rehab.
Which direction should the tape be applied?
Origin to insertion
What is first activated neurologically?
Mechanoreceptors which then activate a-beta fibres
What do the a-beta fibres synapse with?
Interneurons
What is released at the interneuron?
Glutamate
What does glutamate bind to?
The alpha motor neuron
What does glutamate do?
Enhances the excitability of the motor neurons, increasing firing and muscle recruitment
How much tension should be on the tape?
15-35%
What are the contraindications?
Malignancy
Skin infections
Open wounds
DVT
Allergic reactions to the tape
