War of 1812
A conflict between the United States and Britain that began in 1812, primarily over issues of trade and impressment of American sailors.
Impressment
The act of forcing American sailors into the British navy, which heightened tensions between the United States and Britain.
War Hawks
Nationalistic members of Congress, including Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun, who advocated for war against Britain.
Treaty of Ghent
The treaty that ended the War of 1812, signed on Christmas Eve, 1814, which returned relations to their pre-war status.
USS Constitution
An American warship that won a notable victory over the British warship Guerrière, earning the nickname 'Old Ironsides'.
Nationalism
A sense of pride and unity among Americans, which grew during the War of 1812.
Hartford Convention
A series of meetings in 1814 where New England Federalists expressed opposition to the War of 1812 and discussed secession.
Battle of New Orleans
A significant battle fought in January 1815, after the Treaty of Ghent was signed, where American forces led by Andrew Jackson achieved a decisive victory over the British.
