Non-renewable resources
Energy sources that cannot be replaced quickly once they are used up and form over thousands of years.
Fossil fuels
Energy sources made from dead plants and animals buried under layers of rock and scientists, transformed into fuel by heat and pressure over millions of years.
Coal
An energy source formed from ancient swamp plants used mainly for electricity production; it is one of the oldest energy sources used by humans.
Oil (Petroleum)
An energy source formed from tiny marine organisms, extracted through drilling, and used for gas, diesel, and plastic.
Natural gasses
Energy resources often found near oil deposits that burn cleaner than coal and oil and are used for heating homes, cooking, and electricity.
Nuclear energy
A main type of non-renewable energy sourced from uranium.
Renewable energy sources
Energy resources that are non-exhaustible, representing a cleaner alternative that scientists are developing.
Advantages of Non-Renewable Energy
Benefits include high energy output, being reliable and consistent, and being easy to store and transport.
Disadvantages of Non-Renewable Energy
Drawbacks including a limited supply that will run out eventually, causing pollution and climate change, and habitat damage from mining and drilling.
Environmental effects
Consequences of using non-renewable energy including air pollution, water contamination, and habitat destruction.
