Speed
The distance traveled per unit of time; a scalar quantity indicating how fast an object is moving.
Units of Speed
Common units include meters per second (m/s), kilometers per hour (km/h), and miles per hour (mph).
Formula for Speed
Speed=TimeDistance
Example of Speed Calculation
If a car travels 150 meters in 5 seconds, the speed is 30 m/s: 5s150m.
Time Graph
A graph that plots time on the x-axis and distance on the y-axis, used to find speed and distance.
Slope of a Time Graph
The slope indicates speed; a steeper slope indicates a higher speed.
Acceleration
The rate of change of velocity per unit of time; a vector quantity.
Formula for Acceleration
Acceleration=TimeChange in Velocity.
Units of Acceleration
The standard unit for acceleration is meters per second squared (m/s²).
Graph Shapes Indicators
A straight line indicates constant speed, a curved line indicates acceleration or deceleration, and a horizontal line indicates the object is stationary.
