Travel Nurse
A nurse that takes short term assignments in different locations
Assignment
A job or placement at a healthcare facility for a specified period.
Contract
A formal agreement between the travel nurse or agency and the healthcare facility outlining the terms of employment.
Agency
The company that hires, recruits, and places travel nurses at healthcare facilities
Pay Package
The total compensation a travel nurse receives, which may include hourly wage, OT, bonuses, stipends, and insurance.
Stipends
Reimbursements or allowances provided for housing, meals, & travel expenses.
On-Call
When a healthcare provider is available to work outside of their scheduled hours.
Orientation
A period of training or familiarization with a new facility or department before starting the assignment. This can range from a few months to a few days.
Float Pool
A specialty for nurses who are trained to work in multiple departments and are available to “float” or move between various units based on the facility needs
Floating
Refers to a temporary assigning a HCP to work in a different unit or department than their usual one based on the patient care needs. Travel nurses are usually the first ones to be floated.
Shift
The designated working hours for a HCP
Credentials
The basic requirements a nurse must provide to TRS to be eligible for submission to a facility and the full requirements a nurse may provide before starting an assignment.
BLS
A certification that HCP’s must have indicating compentency in performing CPR & other basic life-saving proceedures.
ACLS
A cert for nurses working with patients who have severe cardiovascular conditions.
Ratios
HCP to patient ratios refer to how many patients a nurse is required to care for during a shift
Acuity
The intensity or level of care a patient requires.
Client
Hospitals, clinics, facilities, etc
MSP
A third party organization that takes on the responsibility of managing & streamlining the staffing process for health care facilities
Specialty
A nurses area of expertise. Different travel nursing assignments may require nurses with specific specialties
Licensure
the legal authorization to practice as a nurse
Compact license
an agreement among some states allowing travel nurses to practice in multiple states
Assignment Extension
when a nurses assignment is extended beyond the original contract period.
Short Staffed
When a healthcare facility has fewer candidates than needed to maintain ratios
