5 Precepts of the Church
You shall attend Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation.
Sacrament
An effective sign given to us by Jesus through which we share in God's life.
Sacraments of Christian Initiation
Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation.
Sacraments of Healing
Penance and Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick.
Sacraments of Service
Holy Orders, Matrimony.
Sanctifying grace
The grace we receive in the sacraments.
The Liturgy
The official public prayer of the Church, including the celebration of the Eucharist and other sacraments. Also includes the Liturgy of the Hours, a prayer, parts of
which the Church prays at various times during the day and night
Types of prayer
Praise, petition, intercession, blessing, thanksgiving.
Vocal Prayer
Examples include Our Father, Hail Mary.
Devotions
The Rosary, the Stations of the Cross.
Sin
A deliberate offense against God's holy law in thoughts, words, actions, or lack of actions.
Social Sin
Unjust situations and conditions that negatively impact society and its institutions.
Catholic Social Teachings
The teachings of the Church that call all members to work for justice and peace as Jesus did.
Paschal Mystery
The life, suffering, death, and Resurrection of Jesus, by which we are saved from our sins.
Scripture
The Bible, the written record of God's revelation and his relationship with his people.
Tradition
The Revelation of the Good News of Jesus as lived out in the Church, past and present.
Providence
God's plan for and protection of all creation.
Papal infallibility
The divine guarantee that the pope's official statements of doctrine regarding faith and morals are free from error.
Apostolic succession
The pope and bishops trace their authority back to St. Peter and the Apostles.
Jesus' Divinity
Reaffirmed by Council of Chalcedon that Jesus has two natures-human and divine.
Transubstantiation
By the power of the Holy Spirit and through the words and actions of the priest, the bread and wine is changed into the Body and Blood of Christ during the consecration.
Vocation
A call to serve God and others-laity, consecrated life, ordained ministry.
Evangelize
To proclaim the good news of Christ to people everywhere.
Solidarity
A virtue calling us to recognize that we are all one human family and that our decisions have consequences that reach around the world.
Human dignity
The value and worth that comes from being made in God's image and likeness.
The Ten Commandments/Decalogue
The laws of God's covenant given to Moses on Mt. Sinai.
Gifts of the Holy Spirit
Wisdom, understanding, knowledge, fear of the Lord, counsel, fortitude, piety.
Fruits of the Holy Spirit
Charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self-control, chastity.
Marks of the Church
The four essential features of the Church: One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic.
