- PWA (Public Works Administration) was given $3.3 billion to spend on big construction projects to create jobs
- CWA (Civil Works Administration) provided work on short term projects like refurbishing schools and road building
- TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) was a huge federal planning agency that aimed to provide work, extend coverage of electricity, control flooding

- WPA (Works Administration) helped to employ 8 million and spent $11 billion, helping poor men and women from all walks of life
- It provided work such as road and park building, guidebook writing and travelling theatre groups, helping student stay on at college or join training programmes and sewing and teaching programmes

- Work relief projects like the CCC and PWA received $4 billion
- The Resettlement Administration built new suburban towns and the Housing Act set up a new agency to create new homes to replace shanty towns
- NLRA (National Labor Relations Act) helped to improve the working lives of industrial workers and a minimum wage was soon introduced

- The Resettlement Administration helped to resettle a few thousand families from overworked land
- Replaced by the FSA (Farm Security Administration) which helped rural poor buy their own farms and get new equipment
- FSA also helped migrant workers by setting up migrant camps for shelter and paid for dentists and doctors for them
- The second Agricultural Adjustment Act created compulsory measures to limit production using quotas and were enforced through heavy taxes
The Second New Deal: Help for the old and disadvantaged
- Social Security Act created a federal pension system, federal unemployment insurance for up to 16 weeks, financial support for very old people, families with dependent children and disabled groups
The Second New Deal: Help for workers
- The Wagner Act replaced the National Industrial Recovery Act and strengthened trade unions
- It also created the NLRB (National Labour Relations Board) which supervised union negotiations, defended workers who had been fired and helped unions gain recognition from employers
The Second New Deal: Reforming banks
- The Banking Act of 1935 created a Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System chosen by the president
- It also gave various financial powers to the Board, taking them away from the more powerful banks
Rural Electrification
- TVA built dams to generate electricity and lent money to co-operatives to lay power cables
- EFHA (Electric Home and Farm Authority) aimed to help farmers buy electrical appliances by encouraging companies to make cheaper models and providing loans to farmers
- From 1935, the REA (Rural Electrification Administration) took over the electrification programme and also made loans to rural co-operatives across America
- By 1941, 35% of farms had electricity, 417 co-operatives had been helped with loans to lay electrical wires for new customers by 1939 and the EFHA had arranged 100,000 contracts for electrical goods by 1938.
