Developmental psychology
Studies the chronological order of development and thematic issues in development across the lifespan. How humans change over time.
Nature vs. nurture
Developmental psychologists say BOTH. Nature (genes) set the foundation, but your nurture (environment) shapes how that foundation forms
Stability vs. change
Developmental psychologists say BOTH. People can stay the same person throughout life (stable) and change drastically as they develop (change).
Continuity vs. stages
Do humans develop gradually and smoothly (continuity) or does development jump through stages and processes?
Cross-sectional study
Psychologists compare different age groups at 1 point in time. Issue: different kids, so differences might be generational and not developmental.
Longitudinal study
Follows the same group of people over a long period of time. Issue: more accurate, but takes forever and many people drop out.
