Bryophytes
A group of non-vascular land plants, which include mosses, liverworts, and hornworts.
Gametophyte
The dominant and haploid generation in bryophytes that produces gametes.
Sporophyte
The diploid generation in bryophytes that is dependent on the gametophyte and produces spores.
Rhizoids
Root-like structures in bryophytes that anchor the plant but are not true roots.
Antheridia
The male gametangia in bryophytes that produce sperm.
Archegonia
The female gametangia in bryophytes that contain the egg.
Sphagnum moss
A type of peat moss known for its water-holding capacity and antibacterial properties.
Alternation of generations
The life cycle of plants where the haploid gametophyte and diploid sporophyte alternate.
Hydroids and leptoids
Water- and food-conducting cells in mosses, respectively.
Liverworts
Bryophytes belonging to the phylum Marchantiophyta, characterized by their thalloid structure.
Hornworts
Plants of the phylum Anthocerophyta with horn-shaped sporophytes that have stomata.
Sphagnum
A key genus of mosses that forms peat and is used as a soil amendment.
Calyptra
A covering over the sporangium in bryophytes that falls off prior to spore dispersal.
