McCarthyism
A period in the early 1950s marked by aggressive investigations and accusations of communism, led by Joseph McCarthy.
Eisenhower
U.S. president (1953–1961) who pursued containment of communism while avoiding direct military conflict with the Soviet Union.
HUAC
A committee that investigated alleged disloyalty and communist ties among U.S. citizens during the Cold War.
Muhammed Mossadeq
Iranian leader who nationalized oil in 1951 and was overthrown in a 1953 coup backed by the U.S. and Britain.
Destalinization
The process initiated by Nikita Khrushchev to reduce Stalin’s influence and reform Soviet policies after his death.
Arms Race
The intense competition between the U.S. and the Soviet Union to build more powerful and numerous weapons, especially nuclear arms. MAD- mutually assured destruction
Space Race
The rivalry between the U.S. and the Soviet Union to achieve major milestones in space technology and exploration. Sputnik- 1st satellite in space; Yuri Gagarin- 1st human in space; Apollo 11 - the moon landing.
Suez Crisis
A conflict in which Egypt, led by Gamal Abdel Nasser, faced invasion by Britain, France, and Israel after nationalizing the canal. Egypt retains control over the canal.
Berlin Crisis 1961 (Berlin Wall)
A confrontation that led to the construction of the Berlin Wall, dividing East and West Berlin. Brain drain for East Germany, people go to West Germany.
Brinkmanship
A strategy of pushing dangerous events to the brink of conflict to force an opponent to back down, often associated with nuclear tensions.
