What is a democratic society?
Society that gives power to the people.
For a country to be ‘democratic’ it must allow citizens to have:
The Right to Vote, The Right to Protest and The Right to Free Speech
What does voting involve?
People listening to different parties manifesto and choosing which one they agree with.
What is an example of voting?
In 2026, the people of Scotland voted in election and SNP won with 58 seats.
What is a manifesto?
A document that details a political party’s policies and aims.
What is protesting?
An effective way of influencing the Government as it can highlight certain issues and demonstrates the publics dissatisfaction.
What is an example of protesting?
‘Just Stop Oil’ have protested for changes to the Governments environmental policy.
What does free speech allow people to do?
Openly criticise the Government, alongside allowing them the freedom to express their own views and opinions.
Why is free speech vital to democracy?
It ensures the Government are being held to account.
What are devolved powers?
Controlled by the Scottish Government.
What are reserved powers?
Controlled by the UK Government.
What does the devolved matter of education mean?
The Scottish Government control the Scottish curriculum and exam system.
What is an example of education?
In Scotland, our exam systems are Nat 5 and Highers, in England you have GCSEs and A levels.

The Scottish Government control the Scottish National Health Service, which includes hospitals and promoting public health.
What is an example of health?
Scotland had unique covid laws.
What does the reserved matter of defence mean?
UK Government controls the armed forces.
What is an example of defence?
Making decisions on whether to attack other countries and how to defend our border.

Controls who can enter the country
What is an example of immigration?
Will decide if EU citizens can stay in UK after Brexit.
What is the role of MSPs?
Their main job is representation, which involves making decisions and speaking on behalf of others in their constituency.

Holding surgeries and answer correspondence.
What role of MSPs in the Scottish Parliament?
Taking part in debates and working within committees.
