Traumatic Dental Injuries
Injuries to the tooth, periodontium, and soft tissues due to a traumatic incident.
Infraction
An incomplete fracture or crack of the enamel without loss of tooth structure.
Concussion
Injury to the tooth supporting structures without increased mobility or displacement, but with marked reaction to percussion.
Avulsion
Complete displacement of the tooth out of the socket wherein the periodontal ligament is severed.
Subluxation
Injury to tooth-supporting structures with increased mobility, but without displacement of the tooth.
Crown Fracture
Fracture involving the enamel and dentin of a tooth; can be uncomplicated or complicated (with pulp exposure).
Root Fracture
Fracture that involves the dentin and cementum, possibly affecting the pulp.
Alveolar Fracture
Fracture that involves the alveolar process of the bone that may or may not extend to the alveolar socket.
Luxation
Injury whereby the tooth is displaced in its socket.
Patient Management after Avulsion
Includes preventing further injury, cleaning the area, and ensuring proper stabilization and follow-up.
Storage Medium for Avulsed Teeth
Ideal storage maintains vitality of periodontal ligament cells, examples include Hank's Balanced Salt Solution and cold milk.
Post-replantation care
Includes monitoring for pulp vitality, maintaining oral hygiene, and avoiding certain activities.
Complications of Traumatic Dental Injuries
Includes pulp necrosis, pulpitis, and inflammatory or replacement resorption.
General Principles of Prevention
Strategies include raising awareness, using protective devices, and improving environments to reduce risks.
Follow-up care importance
Timely follow-up is critical for assessing the prognosis and outcome of dental injuries.
Orthodontic Management of Traumatized Teeth
Careful evaluation needed before initiating movement; light forces used to avoid complications.
