Endocrine System
A network of organs and glands that produce hormones responsible for homeostasis, growth, reproduction, and metabolism.
Hormone
Chemical substances that travel through the blood and bind to specific receptors on target cells.
Hypothalamus
A region of the brain that helps secrete regulatory hormones and senses imbalances in the body's chemical levels.
Pituitary Gland
Gland that works with the hypothalamus to regulate other glands and hormones.
Oxytocin
A hormone that stimulates uterine contractions and plays a key role in childbirth.
Antidiuretic Hormone (ADH)
A hormone that increases water retention or reabsorption in the kidneys, released in response to increased blood osmolarity.
Anterior Pituitary Gland (APG)
Composed of epithelial tissues, it regulates the release of other hormones and communicates with the hypothalamus via blood vessels.
Adrenal Gland
Gland located on top of the kidneys that produces hormones such as cortisol, aldosterone, and epinephrine.
Cortisol
A glucocorticoid hormone that targets glycogen and fat, initiating glycogenolysis and lipolysis.
Aldosterone
A mineralocorticoid hormone that targets the kidneys and regulates water and electrolyte balance.
Neural Stimuli
When nerves stimulate hormone release.
Tropic Hormones
Hormones that regulate the release of other hormones.
Non-Tropic Hormones
Hormones that do not regulate the release of other hormones.
