Draw the hormone graph
Yes
What hormones are secreted at the beginning of the cycle? And how are they secreted?
anterior pituitary gland secretes FSH, maturing follicle secretes oestrogen
What does initial secretion of FSH do?
Stimulates maturation of primary follicle into secondary follicle
What does oestrogen do?
Stimulates LH production by anterior pituitary gland, inhibits FSH secretion, triggers endometrium rebuilding
What does LH do?
Stimulates FSH secretion, Induces ovulation on day 14, stimulates conversion of Graafian follicle into corpus luteum
What does FSH do after LH secretion?
Inhibits oestrogen production
What does the corpus luteum do?
Secretes progesterone that maintains endometrium, secretes oestrogen (but this does not stimulate LH secretions due to progesterone), inhibits secretion of FSH and LH
What hormones decrease at these of the cycle? Why?
FSH And LH due to corpus luteum degeneration, causing progesterone to decline
What does low levels of oestrogen and progesterone cause at the end of the cycle?
Endometrium to shed during menstruation
