Species
A group of organisms that can reproduce together and produce fertile offspring.
Classification (from non-specific to specific)
Domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species
Binomial system
Invented by linnaeus, based on the combination of two Latin names denoting genus and species
Heredity
passing dna to offspring
Recombination
random mixing of DNA from parents
Survival of the fittest
theory by Charles darwin, the organisms best suited to their environment are the ones most likely to survive and pass on their traits
Outcomes/types of mutation
Negative; disease, neutral; no effect, positive; improves
Natural selection
this happens due to the natural development/evolution of the ecosystem. When any kind of competition occurs, those best adapted to the new situation survive to reproduce
Factors of natural selection
Predators, toxins, parasites, animals of same species, changes in habitat or climate
Artificial selection
happens due to human influence; selective breeding (different crop types, dog types, etc.)
How do bacteria become resistant to anitbiotics?
there is variation in the population due to mutation, some bacteria are resistent against the antibiotics and will have a higher chance of survival and are therefore capable of reproduction, leading to an increase of resistant bacteria
Explaining Darwin’s theory of evolution
Find a variation, identify an advantage, explain who survives, explain how the population changes over time
