Carbon Cycle
The process through which carbon is exchanged between living organisms, the atmosphere, and the Earth's crust.
Biotic Phase
The stage in the carbon cycle where inorganic ions are incorporated into living organisms.
Abiotic Phase
The stage in the carbon cycle where inorganic ions are returned to the non-living part of the ecosystem.
Fossil Fuels
Natural substances formed from the remains of ancient plants and animals, containing stored carbon.
Photosynthesis
The process by which plants absorb carbon dioxide and convert it into organic compounds using sunlight.
Respiration
The process through which organisms convert organic compounds back into carbon dioxide, releasing energy.
Carbon Sink
Reservoirs that absorb more carbon than they release, helping to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
Human Influence
The impact of human activities, particularly since the Industrial Revolution, on the natural carbon cycle.
Ocean Acidification
The decrease in ocean pH caused by absorption of excess carbon dioxide, negatively affecting marine life.
Decomposition
The process through which organic materials are broken down, releasing carbon back into the environment.
