Convection
Is the transfer of heat through the movement of fluids (liquid or gases). It occurs when warmer less dense rises and colder more dense fluids sink, creating a convection current
Concept of density and heating
When a substance is heated, its particles move faster and spread further apart causing it to expand
This decrease in density means the warmer fluid is less dense than the surrounding colder fluid
How convection works
The less dense warmer fluid rises, carrying thermal energy with it. As it cools it becomes denser and sinks, replicated by more rising warm fluid. This continuous circulation transfers heat.
