Grapheme
A letter or group of letters representing a sound in a language.
/ā/
The long vowel sound represented by graphemes such as a, ai, ay.
Phoneme
The smallest unit of sound in a language.
Syllable
A single, unbroken sound of a spoken (or written) word.
Onset
The initial consonant sound of a syllable.
Rime
The part of the syllable that contains the vowel and any following consonants.
Digraph
A combination of two letters that create one sound.
Blend
A group of two or more consonants where each sound is heard.
Short Vowel Sound
A vowel sound that is pronounced in a short manner, such as in 'cat'.
Long Vowel Sound
A vowel sound that is pronounced the same as the letter's name, such as 'a' in 'cake'.
Schwa Sound
The neutral vowel sound that occurs in unstressed syllables, represented by 'ə'.
Syllable Types
Categories used to classify syllables based on their structure, such as closed, open, and vowel-r.
Phonemic Symbol
Symbols that represent the sounds in phonemes.
