What is Diana Baumrind’s parenting taxonomy?
A system that classifies parenting styles based on responsiveness (warmth) and control (discipline).
: What is acceptance/responsiveness?

What is control?
How much a parent sets rules, monitors, and enforces behavior.
What is autonomy support?
Encouraging independence and decision-making while still guiding the child.
Authoritative parenting
High warmth + high control
Sets rules but explains them
Encourages independence
👉 Best overall outcomes (confident, self-controlled kids)
authoritarian parenting
Low warmth + high control
Strict, “because I said so”
Little emotional support
👉 Kids may be obedient but anxious or less confident
Permissive parenting
High warmth + low control
Very loving, few rules
👉 Kids may struggle with self-control
Uninvolved/indifferent parenting
Low warmth + low control
Neglectful, little guidance
👉 Worst outcomes (poor emotional & social development)
Directive parenting
Parent gives clear instructions and guidance
👉 Can be positive if paired with warmth (similar to authoritative when balanced)
Democratic parenting
Parent includes child in decision-making
Values child’s opinion
👉 Very similar to authoritative
“Good enough” parenting
Parent is not perfect but meets basic emotional and physical needs
👉 Healthy development doesn’t require perfection
