Communication
The transmission of ideas and emotions between people using verbal (spoken or written words) and nonverbal cues (gestures, tone, facial expressions, etc.).
Communis
The Latin root word for communication, meaning "to share" or "to make common."
Stimulus
The inner urge, idea, or need that motivates a person to communicate, such as a manager realizing a report needs to be submitted.
Encoding
The process of choosing the right words, symbols, tone, or gestures to express an idea.
Message
The actual content being sent from the sender to the receiver.
Channel
The medium or method used to send the message, which can be verbal, written, or visual.
Decoding
The process of interpreting or making sense of the message by the receiver.
Feedback
The receiver’s response, which tells the sender if the message was understood.
Noise
Any barrier (external or internal) that interferes with how clearly a message is sent, received, or understood at any point in the process.
Physical Noise
Distractions in the environment, such as a meeting disrupted by construction noise outside the office.
Psychological Noise
Mental or emotional interference, such as a team member being too anxious or upset to focus on the conversation.
Physiological Noise
Body-related issues, such as being hungry, tired, or having a headache, that cause a person to struggle to listen.
Be Clear and Concise
A method to minimize noise by using simple, direct language and avoiding rambling or vague words.
Right Channel
A method to minimize noise by matching the message with the best way to send it.
Check Understanding
A method to minimize noise by asking questions or encouraging the other person to respond.
