What is the role of the placenta during pregnancy?
The placenta supplies the baby with oxygen and nutrients, removes waste products, and produces important hormones.
What does the umbilical cord do?
The umbilical cord connects the fetus to the placenta, carrying oxygen-rich blood and nutrients to the fetus and transporting waste back to the placenta.
What is the function of the uterus?
The uterus is where the fertilized egg implants and grows, providing a protective space for the developing fetus.
What is the purpose of the amniotic sac?
The amniotic sac cushions the baby, allows movement for muscle and bone development, and maintains a warm and stable environment.
What role does the cervix play during pregnancy?
The cervix acts as a protective gate, keeping the baby inside the uterus and remaining firm and closed.
What is the process of labor?
Labor is the process where the uterus contracts to push the baby and placenta out of the body.
What hormone regulates aspects of the reproductive system?
Oxytocin regulates aspects of the reproductive system.
What are the stages of labor?
The stages of labor are: First Stage (cervical dilatation), Second Stage (baby is born), Third Stage (placenta is delivered), and Fourth Stage (recovery period).
What occurs during the active phase of the first stage of labor?
Cervix dilates from about 6-8 cm, contractions are stronger and more frequent, and the mother may experience increased discomfort.
How long does the second stage of labor generally last?
Expectant mothers should be pushing the baby out for no more than 2-3 hours.
What happens during the placental stage?
The placenta is delivered, which typically occurs 5-30 minutes after the birth of the baby, with a normal blood loss of 300-500 mL.
What is the significance of vasa previa?
Vasa previa occurs when cord vessels cross the cervix, posing a risk of rupture leading to fetal hemorrhage and potentially death.
What are the three core components of labor?
The three core components are Passenger (baby's position/size), Passageway (pelvis/soft tissues), and Power (contractions/pushing).
