Social Support
Emotional support and resources provided by interpersonal relations with people, groups, and the larger community; associated with lower mortality rates.
Hardiness
A set of attitudes characterized by seeing change as a challenge, being committed to life and work, and believing in one's ability to control events.
Cognitive Control
The ability to think differently about negative emotions generated by stressful situations, including emotion-focused coping.
Decisional Control
The ability to choose an alternative course of action in response to stress, often involving consultation with close others.
Crisis Debriefing
A single session conducted soon after a traumatic event aimed at preventing PTSD; however, research indicates it may increase the risk of developing PTSD.
Proactive Coping
Anticipation of stressful situations and taking preventive steps before they arise, viewing stressful situations as opportunities for growth.
Rumination
The process of endlessly analyzing negative experiences, which may be more frequent in women, but can be beneficial if managed.
Flexible Coping
The ability to adjust coping strategies in response to the demands of a stressful situation, related to lower stress levels.
Catharsis
The disclosing of painful feelings, which can be useful when combined with problem-solving efforts.
Acceptance
Recognizing and accepting circumstances or feelings that cannot be changed, coupled with a positive outlook to handle stress.
