proportionality
wider voter choice
fewer wasted votes
p1 proportionality
alt: ams and pr produece more proportionate results. fptp general elec 2024 showed clear disproportionality. lab won 33% vote but around 63% seats. reform won 14% only 5 seats. scotland AMS snp won 38% constituency vote and 58 seats. reform won around 16% regional vote and 17 msps. fairer conversion. wales 2026 PR plaid cymru won 35% vote and 43 seats. reform 29% = 34 seats
fptp: prevents extremism. 2024 reform support spread . only win if have concentrated support. under proportional system, bnp would have won 13 seats w 2% vote in 2010
p2 wider voter choice
alt: ams and stv = greater voter choice, ams (scot) gives voters 2 votes- allowing split ticket voting. STV allows boters to rank candidates . can split votes btw diff parties. encourages pluralism and better represent of minority views. less tactical voting
fptp: delivers clear winner. gen elec 2024: lab formed gov immediately with large majority. clear gov mandate, good during uncertainty. all other systems fail to produce single party gov capable of delivering full mainfesto. stv produced unstable n.ire parliemnts w frequent suspensions
p3: fewer wasted votes
alt: ams and pr sig reduce wasted votes. under fptp votes cast for losing candidates or surplus votes in safe seats have no impact. gen elec 2024 saw millions of wasted votes esp for reform and greens. ams in scotland ensure party list votes still count even if constituency candidates lose. stv has the fewest wasted votes due to droop quota system even voters 4th and 5th choice votes will be counted.
fptp: clear accountabilty. 1 mp per constituency creates strong representative link. voters can clearly reward or punish individuals. liz truss lost her seat 2024-direct accountability. simplicity and accountability resonate strongly w voters.
