Sahara
The biggest hot desert in the world, which covers much of North Africa.
Atlas Mountains
A mountain range with snowy peaks found in Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia.
Nile River
The longest river in the world, which flows through Sudan and Egypt before reaching the Mediterranean Sea.
Maghrib
An Arabic word meaning "the sunset," used to describe the western part of North Africa including Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia.
Sahel
A semi-arid, dry grassland area just south of the Sahara where people farm and raise animals.
Colonialism
The period when European countries like France, Britain, and Italy took control of North African lands and resources, shaping modern borders.
Delta
A fan-shaped piece of land where a river divides and empties into the sea, such as the Nile Delta.
Ottoman Empire
A powerful empire ruled by Turkish sultans from 1299-1922.
Anatolia
A region in modern-day Turkey where the Ottoman Empire originated from Turkic tribes.
Constantinople
The city conquered by the Ottomans in 1453, which was later renamed Istanbul.
Janissaries
Elite Ottoman soldiers trained from childhood who used firearms and followed strict discipline.
Bureaucracy
A system of government officials used by the Ottoman Empire to manage administration across its vast territories.
Gunpowder Empire
A term for the Ottoman Empire reflecting their effective use of cannons and muskets in battle to expand their territory.
Provinces
Administrative regions within the Ottoman Empire governed by local officials called Beys.
Suleyman I
The Ottoman Sultan who ruled from 1520-1566, presiding over a Golden Age of military conquest and legal reform.
Mimar Sinan
The chief architect for the Ottoman Empire who designed the famous Suleymaniye Mosque.
Suleymaniye Mosque
A grand mosque in Istanbul that serves as one of the greatest examples of Ottoman architecture.
The Lawgiver
A title for Suleyman I (Kanuni) reflecting his comprehensive legal reforms that created a fair justice system.
The Magnificent
A title for Suleyman I used to describe his military conquests, immense wealth, and cultural achievements.
Public institutions
Community facilities built by the Ottomans, such as hospitals, schools, and soup kitchens, to serve the public.
Minarets
Tall towers that are a key feature of Ottoman mosque architecture.
