SUBSISTENCE
Physical needs including food, water, shelter, health, air, movement, exercise, rest, sleep, sexual expression, safety, and touch.
PROTECTION
The need for safety, security, stability, support, and order.
AFFECTION (LOVE)
The need for connection, acceptance, belonging, care, appreciation, cooperation, communication, closeness, companionship, compassion, consideration, consistency, empathy, intimacy, mutuality, nurturing, respect, trust, warmth, and the experience of being known, seen, and understood.
UNDERSTANDING
The need for learning, growth, meaning making, discovery, awareness, clarity, consciousness, stimulation, and the state of knowing and seeing.
PARTICIPATION
The need for community, inclusion, shared purpose, contribution, communion, equality, and harmony.
LEISURE (RECREATION)
The need for rest, fun, joy, play, humor, ease, and peace.
CREATION
The need for self-expression, innovation, purpose, efficacy, effectiveness, inspiration, and beauty.
IDENTITY
The need for self-worth, recognition, integrity, authenticity, honesty, presence, self-respect, to matter, celebration of life challenge, competence, mourning, and hope.
FREEDOM
The need for choice, autonomy, self-determination, independence, space, spontaneity, and self-reliance.
FEELINGS WHEN NEEDS ARE MET
Emotional states such as AFFECTIONATE, ENGAGED, HOPEFUL, CONFIDENT, EXCITED, GRATEFUL, INSPIRED, JOYFUL, EXHILARATED, PEACEFUL, and REFRESHED.
FEELINGS WHEN NEEDS ARE NOT MET
Emotional states such as AFRAID, ANNOYED, ANGRY, VULNERABLE, AVERSION, CONFUSED, DISCONNECTED, YEARNING, DISQUIET, EMBARRASSED, FATIGUE, PAIN, SAD, and TENSE.
ENGAGED
A feeling when needs are met characterized by being curious, interested, fascinated, absorbed, enchanted, or alert.
AVERSION
A feeling when needs are not met characterized by being horrified, contemptuous, disgusted, repulsed, hostile, or feeling hate.
DISCONNECTED
A feeling when needs are not met characterized by being withdrawn, numb, distant, aloof, alienated, or detached.
EXHILARATED
A feeling when needs are met characterized by being thrilled, ecstatic, elated, radiant, blissful, or enthralled.
FATIGUE
A feeling when needs are not met characterized by being tired, depleted, burnt out, exhausted, lethargic, or beat.
