flexion
movement that decreases the angle between two body parts
extension
movement that increases the angle between two body parts
abduction
moving a part away from the midline (of the body)
adduction
moving a part towards the midline (of the body)
medial rotation
the anterior of the arm (or thigh) is moved toward the median plane (medially or inward)
lateral rotation
the anterior of the arm (or thigh) is moved away from the median plane (laterally or outward)
supination
rotation of the forearm resulting in the palm facing anteriorly (or turned upwards)
pronation
rotation of the forearm resulting in the palm facing posteriorly (or turned downwards)
dorsiflexion
movement of the ankle in which the dorsum of the foot is lifted (toes up; heel down)
plantar flexion
movement of the ankle in which the plantar surface of the foot is pointed downwards (toes down; heel up)
inversion
turning the sole of the foot medially (inward)
eversion
turning the sole of the foot laterally (outward)
elevation
lifting a body part superiorly (up)
depression
moving a body part inferiorly (down)
protraction
moving a body part in the anterior direction
