Romeo
The son and heir of Montague and Lady Montague. A young man of about sixteen, handsome, intelligent, and sensitive, Romeo is impulsive and immature, living in the middle of a violent feud but only interested in love. He marries Juliet secretly and prefers peace over violence.
Juliet
The daughter of Capulet and Lady Capulet, a beautiful thirteen-year-old girl who matures quickly upon falling in love with Romeo. Despite her aristocratic constraints, she shows remarkable courage and is willing to defy her family for love.
Friar Lawrence
A Franciscan friar and friend to both Romeo and Juliet, who marries them in hopes of reconciling their families. He is knowledgeable in potions and herbs, and is a kind, civic-minded planner.
Mercutio
A close friend of Romeo, known for his imagination, wit, and satirical nature. He challenges Romeo's romantic notions and prefers a pragmatic view of love.
The Nurse
Juliet's confidante and caretaker, who provides comic relief with her long-winded speeches. She contrasts with Juliet's idealism by viewing love as earthy and practical, preferring a sensible match for Juliet.
Tybalt
Juliet's cousin, known for his vanity and aggressive nature. He is quick to draw his sword and has a deep hatred for Montagues.
Capulet
The authoritative patriarch of the Capulet family, concerned with his daughter's marriage prospects, and showing a protective but controlling nature over Juliet.
Lady Capulet
Juliet's mother, eager for her daughter to marry Paris and relying heavily on the Nurse for support.
Montague
Romeo's father and patriarch of the Montague clan, initially preoccupied with Romeo's sadness.
Lady Montague
Romeo's mother, who dies from grief after Romeo's exile.
Paris
A kinsman of the Prince and suitor favored by Capulet for Juliet, who acts presumptuously regarding their marriage.
