What is the largest structure in the universe?
The Universe itself.
What is a galaxy?
A galaxy consists of billions of solar systems with a central star, all held together by gravity.
How many galaxies did the Hubble Space Telescope find in a small patch of space?
10,000 galaxies.
What galaxy is our solar system part of?
The Milky Way Galaxy.
What does a solar system consist of?
A central star with orbiting planets, all held together by gravity.
What shape are the orbits of objects in our solar system?
Orbits are usually elliptical, or oval, in shape.
What is the distance from the Earth to the Sun?
93 million miles.
How old is the Sun?
4.5 billion years.
What is the hottest part of the Sun?
The core
What are asteroids?
Rocky remains from the formation of our solar system, mostly found between Mars and Jupiter.
What happens when a meteoroid enters Earth's atmosphere?
It burns up and creates a streak of light .
What is a comet?
An icy core that can have a tail of gases when near the Sun.
How often does Halley's Comet orbit the Sun?
Every 75-76 years.
What is gravity?
An attractive force that pulls objects toward each other.
What two factors affect the strength of gravitational force?
Mass and distance.
What is the difference between mass and weight?
Mass is the amount of matter in an object, while weight is the gravitational force acting on that mass.
Why would your weight be different on the Moon compared to Earth?
Because the Moon has a weaker gravitational pull than Earth.
What are lunar phases?
The different appearances of the Moon as it orbits Earth, including New Moon, First Quarter, Full Moon, and Last Quarter.
How long does a complete lunar cycle take?
About 29.5 days.
What is a solar eclipse?
When the Moon moves between the Sun and Earth, blocking the Sun's light.
What is a lunar eclipse?
When the Earth moves between the Sun and Moon, casting a shadow on the Moon.
Why don't eclipses happen every new or full moon?
Because the Moon's orbit is tilted.
