Design Process
A series of 5 steps used in Technology to move from a problem to a solution.
Design Considerations
A set of 9 specific factors that must be understood and explained when analyzing a case study.
Graphic Communication
The use of visual representations, line types, and scales to convey technical information in Technology.
Scale
The ratio used to reflect the size of a drawing, which can be used to scale up or scale down an object's representation.
Isometric Drawings
A specific type of technical drawing used for three-dimensional visualization.
Orthographic Drawings
A method of representing three-dimensional objects through different perspectives, categorized into First angle and Third angle.
Gear
A component of a mechanical system used to change speed, direction, or force multiplication.
Idler Gear
A gear positioned between the driver and driven gear to ensure they rotate in the same direction.
Pulley
A mechanical device used in single or compound forms to create mechanical advantage.
Velocity Ratio
A measure of the performance in mechanical systems, often analyzed alongside force multiplication in gears.
Levers
Mechanical components categorized as single or linked used to control movement and force.
Acid Mine Drainage
A dangerous environmental impact of mining in South Africa involving the outflow of acidic water.
Iron Age
The historical era in South Africa characterized by indigenous mining and the use of iron.
Smelting
A 6-step process (plus a final step) used to extract metals from ore.
Mechanical Advantage
The measure of force amplification achieved by using mechanisms, simple mechanisms, or complex machines.
Driver Gear
The gear that provides the initial rotation and power input in a system.
Driven Gear
The gear that receives motion and power from the driver gear.
Cams and Cranks
Specific mechanisms designed to change the direction of movement within a system.
Biodegradable Products
Materials capable of being decomposed by bacteria or other living organisms.
Natural vs. Synthetic Materials
The classification of materials based on whether they are derived from nature or are man-made.
Recycling
The process of converting waste paper and other materials into reusable products to create a positive impact on the environment.
