Civil War
A conflict between the Northern states (Union) and Southern states (Confederacy) of the United States, fought from 1861 to 1865.
Emancipation
The act of freeing people from slavery; notably, the Emancipation Proclamation declared all slaves in Confederate states to be free.
Anaconda Plan
A Union strategy during the Civil War to blockade the South and divide it by controlling the Mississippi River.
Draft
A system for requiring citizens to join their country's armed forces, implemented in the North and South during the Civil War.
Gettysburg Address
A speech by Abraham Lincoln delivered at the dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery in Gettysburg, emphasizing the principles of human equality and the purpose of the Civil War.
Total War
A military strategy that aims to destroy not only the enemy's army but also its resources and will to fight.
Fort Sumter
The site in Charleston, South Carolina, where the first shots of the Civil War were fired in April 1861.
