The Customer

Cross-Docking

A term normally associated with order processing.
Order Cycle Time
The time it takes to process an order from the time the order is received from the customer until the order is delivered.
Production Facility
A type of facility such as a factory that makes hand tools or a car factory.
Stocking
The process of assigning products to the proper location in a warehouse.
Retail Outlet
A type of facility such as a jewelry store.
Transporter
The role played by companies like UPS and FedEx in the supply chain.
SKU
An acronym for Stock Keeping Unit.
Loading
The key function of the shipping department.
Warehouses/ Distribution Centers
Places where materials are stored for future use; performance is measured in units, line items, or cases per hour.
Supply Chain Logistics Trends
Developments including the adoption of computer-based technologies, increasing transportation costs, and higher customer expectations.
Finished goods inventory
Type of inventory that includes finished products that are ready for storage or shipment.
Raw material provider
A type of facility such as a coal mine.
Receiving
The first step in a typical logistics operation; errors here often continue throughout the rest of the material chain.
Acquisition
The process of establishing product inventory.
Efficiency in order fulfillment
The main productivity metric for logistics.
