Evaporites
Sedimentary rocks that form from the evaporation of water, usually seawater, leading to the precipitation of minerals like salts.
Salina
An ephemeral lake created by interior drainage and evaporation, usually smaller than traditional lakes.
Halite
A mineral form of sodium chloride (NaCl), commonly known as rock salt, often found in evaporite deposits.
Cyclothems
Cyclic sequences of sedimentary rock layers characterized by alternating marine and nonmarine conditions, often linked to changes in sea level.
Taphonomy
The study of how organisms decay and become fossilized, often examining the breakage and preservation of remains.
Gypsum
A soft sulfate mineral (CaSO4·2H2O) that is a significant component of evaporite deposits.
Carbonate Breccias
Sedimentary rocks composed of broken fragments of carbonate minerals, indicating a history of hard crusts being broken apart.
Bioturbation
The disturbance of sedimentary deposits by living organisms, which can modify the structure and texture of the sediment.
Oncolites
Spherical or oval structures formed in shallow waters, primarily composed of calcite and often featuring microbialites.
Crystallization order
The sequence in which minerals crystallize from a solution, significant for understanding the composition of evaporites.
