How dependnat was EU and Russian gas

In 2021, 45% of imported gas was from Russia, → tis meant great resource insecurity as it was used for heating and electricity

However, Central and Eastern Europe were most impacted as only 20% of russian gas was imported into Western European countries

WHy did this dependance create a resource dependacy problem

This is because in 2022, when Russia attacked Ukraine, the gas became a politically sensitive product.

Nations had to switch from Russia as a source of gas, as it was indirectly helping Russia win the war through financing.

As a result, gas availability decreased, and prices increased, driving many companies out of business and decreasing disposable income

How the the russian gas imports change

In total, 12% of gas originated from russia in 2025 as they also provided 6% of gas via LNG

What were the EU adaptations

Countries had to diversify or search for gas from other sources, such as LNG from Norway and the USA

LNG rose by 60% ofter 2022

Between 2022 and 2026, gas consumption decreased by 19% due to diversification, but also increased efficiency of usage and warmer winters
