EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, a psychotherapy treatment for PTSD.
Phase 1 of EMDR
Discussing the client’s history and developing a treatment plan with assessed resources.
Phase 2 of EMDR
Preparation phase where the therapist explains the EMDR process and collaborates with the client to prepare coping techniques.
Phase 3 of EMDR
Assessment phase identifying the target event along with associated images, beliefs, and feelings.
Phase 4 of EMDR
Desensitization phase utilizing bilateral stimulation to reduce client's distress about the traumatic event.
Phase 5 of EMDR
Installation phase where a positive belief is associated with the target event.
Phase 6 of EMDR
Body scan phase in which the client scans for any lingering disturbances while holding the target event in mind.
Phase 7 of EMDR
Closure phase assisting the client to return to a calm state regardless of reprocessing completeness.
Phase 8 of EMDR
Reevaluation phase that begins each new session to discuss processed memories and ensure continuity in distress levels.
Effectiveness of therapy
Refers to whether the therapy has any effect on the symptoms.
Efficiency of therapy
Refers to how quickly and effectively the therapy works compared to others.
Randomized control trials
Research method involving randomly assigned groups to evaluate therapy effectiveness.
Client satisfaction
Measure of the client’s contentment with the therapy process and outcomes.
Non-directive supportive therapy (NDST)
Therapeutic approach focusing on counselor-client relationship and unconditional positive regard.
Anecdotal evidence
Information based on personal accounts rather than scientific evidence.
Publication bias
The tendency to publish positive findings more than negative or null results.
