Reinforcement
A consequence following a behavior that increases the likelihood of that behavior occurring again in the future.
Positive reinforcement
Involves presenting an appetitive stimulus after a behavior to make it more likely to recur.
Negative reinforcement
Involves removing an aversive stimulus after a behavior to increase the likelihood of that behavior happening again.
Factors affecting reinforcement
Include timing, consistency, and ensuring the reinforcement follows the desired behavior.
Types of reinforcers
Unconditional, conditioned, and generalized conditioned reinforcers.
Punishment
A consequence leading to a decrease in a behavior's likelihood of occurring again.
Positive punishment
Involves presenting an aversive stimulus after a behavior to reduce its recurrence.
Negative punishment
Involves removing an appetitive stimulus after a behavior to decrease the likelihood of that behavior happening again.
Issues with punishment
Immediate results, emotional reactions, negative reinforcement of the punisher's behavior, and failure to teach appropriate replacement behaviors.
