Public International Law (PIL)
The law of nations which governs relations among subjects of international law.
Private International Law (PIL)
Also known as Conflict of Laws, it deals with relations between individuals or legal persons where the laws of more than one state may apply.
Consent
The basis on which International Law exists, arising from the agreement of states to be bound by its rules.
Peace of Westphalia
The treaty concluded in 1648 that marked the end of the Thirty Years' War in Europe and is considered by some to mark the beginning of modern International Law.
Hugo Grotius
A Dutch jurist known as the father of International Law, recognized for his work 'De jure belli ac pacis'.
Jurist
A legal scholar or expert, especially one who specializes in international law.
Peremptory Norm
Fundamental principles of international law from which no derogation is permitted.
Natural Law
The theory that law is based on principles inherent in nature and discoverable through reason.
Positivism
The legal theory that law is created by states and is valid as long as it is enacted by a recognized authority.
Grotianism
A legal theory that harmonizes natural law and positivism, asserting that states are bound by moral laws inherent in international relations.
International Court of Justice (ICJ)
The principal judicial organ of the United Nations, involved in resolving disputes between states.
Treaty
A formal agreement between states that is legally binding under international law.
Conflict of Laws (CoL)
A field of private international law addressing which jurisdiction's laws apply to a particular legal dispute involving foreign elements.
Sovereignty
The authority of a state to govern itself and make its own laws.
International Organizations
Entities established by treaties between states, involved in various international activities and bearing legal personality under international law.
Human Rights
The basic rights and freedoms that belong to every person, which are recognized and protected within international law.
