Which reactant goes in the burette and the conical flask and why?
the standard thiosulfate goes in the burette
the dilute bleach goes in the conical flask
the base goes in the flask as it can react with the glass over time causing blockages
What is added to the bleach solution and why?
dilute sulfuric acid
supplies sufficient H+ ions so that all the hypochlorite ions are completely reduced to Cl- ions and iodine
What is added to keep iodine in solution in the titration + what is the other reason for adding it?
iodide ions/potassium iodide
to ensure all the bleach has reacted to produce the maximum amount of iodine
Describe the colour change during the titration
red-brown to straw yellow
blue-black to colourless
