where is most of Earth’s water located?
ocean
where is most of Earth’s freshwater located?
glaciers
Aquifers
Groundwater
Impervious surfaces (& how they impact bodies of water and ground water)
Transpiration
Infiltration
Accumilation
Stages of the water cycle
How does the water temperature affect density?
The higher the temperature, the lower the density. This is because the molecules move faster and more spread apart than cold water.
How does the salinity of the water affect density?
The higher the salinity, the denser the water. This is because the salt adds mass to the water, making it denser than fresh or drinking water.
Why is the dead sea so easy to float on?
There is so much salt in it that it is a supersaturated solution and the density is significantly higher than that of the human body.
How do gases behave at different temperatures
how does temperature affect air density
As temperature increases, the density decreases
How does altitude affect air pressure and density
The air pressure and air density both decrease
How does a hot air balloon work?
The fire warms the air inside the balloon, making it less dense than the surrounding air so it floats upward.
what is wind? What direction does air move?
Why is the atmosphere important?
provides breathable oxygen, protects against harmful solar radiation, warms the planet through the greenhouse effect, and is responsible for the water cycle
Composition of the atmosphere- what gases make up the atmosphere?
78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 1% argon, carbon dioxide, neon, helium, methane, krypton, hydrogen, nitrous oxide, xenon, ozone, and water vapor
Layers of atmosphere
Trophosphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, exosphere
Trophosphere
Weather, greenhouse effect, hot air balloon, humans
stratosphere
ozone layer, airplanes
mesosphere
coldest, meteors burning
thermosphere
high heat, auroras
exosphere
extremely hot, fades into outer space, Would feel freezing cold because there aren’t enough molecules to transfer heat to you
Greenhouse effect
what are examples of greenhouse gases
where do greenhouse gases come from
is the greenhouse effect good or bad
the greenhouse effect acts as a ‘blanket” for the earth; without it, Earth would be a cold and inhabitable planet.
what layer of the atmosphere does GHE occur in
trophosphere
ozone layer
what layer of the atmosphere is ozone layer in
stratosphere
How can the ozone layer be depleted
what type of UV radiation is filtered by the ozone layer
UVC radiation
