Central Nervous System (CNS)
The main part of the nervous system, consisting of the brain and spinal cord.
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
Connects the CNS to the rest of the body through spinal nerve roots and peripheral nerves.
Cerebrospinal Fluid
Fluid that bathes the spinal cord and supports the brain within the cranium.
Meninges
Three protective layers of tissue covering the brain: Pia Mater, Arachnoid Mater, and Dura Mater.
Autonomic Nervous System
Part of the nervous system that controls involuntary body functions, including the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems.
Cerebellum
A section of the brain responsible for coordination and balance.
Decorticate Posturing
Rigid posturing where arms are flexed and legs are extended, indicating neurological damage.
Decerebrate Posturing
Rigid posturing with both arms and legs extended, indicating severe brain injury.
Ischemic Stroke
A type of stroke caused by a blood clot blocking blood flow to the brain.
Hemorrhagic Stroke
A type of stroke caused by the bursting of a blood vessel in the brain.
Concussion
A brain injury caused by a direct blow to the head or a violent shaking of the head.
Post-Concussion Syndrome
A set of symptoms that persists for more than four weeks after a concussion, including headaches and mood changes.
Bacterial Meningitis
An infection of the CNS that is highly contagious and can escalate quickly, often requiring aggressive treatment.
Seizure
Sudden electrochemical discharge in the brain that disrupts normal function, resulting in abnormal behavior or movements.
Coup and Contrecoup Injuries
Coup is the injury occurring on the same side as the impact, while contrecoup is on the opposite side.
