Quiet Corners

Thought about leaving it on her desk.

(Staring at a closed laptop)

I keep thinking she’ll walk in any second, telling us she’s got a new list of books to recommend. Or that paper she wanted us to read.

Even thought I told anyone it was no big deal

(Looking at her hands)
She stayed late to help me with essays. When I bombed that first AP test, she said “You’re not a grade, Rachel.” I always thought that teachers were just…teachers. She didn’t feel like that.

Mine cried. I didn't expect that.

(Softly)
My mom sent flowers. I… didn’t know what to do. I kept thinking, maybe she’ll text. Does anyone else still keep checking their inbox?

I don’t want to forget her laugh.

We could run the book drive she wanted to start? The one for the elementary school?

We tell them about her.

I think that’s what she’d want.
