Line
A mark that connects two points; can be horizontal, vertical, diagonal, curved, zigzag, thick, or thin.
Shape
A flat (2D) area that has length and width; can be geometric (man-made) or organic (natural).
Form
A 3D object that has length, width, and depth; can be geometric (like a cube or sphere) or organic (like a human body).
Value
The lightness or darkness of a color or tone, creating depth, form, emphasis, and contrast.
Balance
The equal distribution of visual weight in artwork; can be symmetrical (both sides the same) or asymmetrical (different sides but balanced).
Contrast
The placement of opposite elements together to create visual interest; examples include black and white or thick and thin lines.
Emphasis
Creating a focal point in artwork; achieved by making an object bigger, using strong contrast, or varying line thickness.
Movement
How the viewer’s eye travels through an artwork; created through diagonal lines, curved flowing lines, and repetition of shapes.
