Thermal Tools
Tools that use heat to set a desired texture into the hair, typically focused on preparation before creating a long hair design.
Blow Dryers
Used with attachments, brushes, combs, or fingers to air form wet hair and create temporary changes in direction and texture.
Marcel Irons
A professional term for curling irons used to create temporary curl texture.
Flat Irons
Tools consisting of two flat plates used to temporarily straighten, wave, and silk hair.
Wands
Tools available in a variety of diameters used to create temporary curl or wave texture.
Crimpers
Heated tools consisting of angular or serrated plates used to create a crimped texture or zigzag pattern.
Thermal Rollers
Rollers used on dry hair to quickly add volume and soft texture; hair should cool completely before removal.
Air Forming Brushes
Brushes, such as 7- or 9-row brushes, that allow the greatest airflow to dry lengths quickly and direct them into the lines of the design.
Vent Brush
A brush designed to allow airflow, used to create more movement and texture.
Paddle Brush
A tool used during air forming to achieve a smooth finish.
Cushion Brushes
Brushes with dense natural, synthetic, or combination bristles used on dry hair to relax a set, backbrush, increase shine, and smooth the surface.
Round Brushes
Brushes used to create volume and curved end texture; some may have metal interiors to retain heat.
Molding Comb
A comb used to distribute and mold the hair during the initial setup and finishing of a design.
Master Sketcher Comb
A large comb specifically used to backcomb and smooth the surface of the hair.
Fine-Tooth Tail Comb
Also known as a drawing comb, it is used for sectioning, finishing, and detailing the hair design.
Wide-Tooth Tail Comb
A comb used for backcombing and various finishing techniques.
Bobby Pins
Supplies generally used to secure large or heavy sections by being slightly opened and slid into the hair.
Locking
A technique where bobby pins are crossed over one another to create extra security, often used in vertical roll designs.
Elastic Bands
Supplies used to hold ponytails in position and secure the ends of braided or twisted strands.
Hairpins
Supplies used to secure smaller, more delicate areas of a design; they are easier to conceal and often placed closer to the surface.
Hairnets
Supplies that provide extra support and security in heavy or long areas and can also be used to create fillers.
Fillers
Also called padding, these are often made from synthetic hair fibers and are used to provide customizable shape, support, and volume in a design.
Thermal Protective Spray
A product applied to all hair types before and during hair preparation to protect against heat stress.
Working Hairspray
A product applied to hair before and during preparation and design to provide support.
Finishing Hairspray
A product applied after the long hair design is complete to ensure longevity.
Equipment
Permanent salon fixtures used during long hair services, such as a hairdressing station, hydraulic chair, and shampoo bowl.
