Single Displacement Reaction
A reaction where one element replaces another in a compound.
General form of Single Displacement Reaction
A + BC(aq) → AC(aq) + B
Displacement Reaction
Reactions where an element displaces another element from a compound.
Reactivity Series
A list that ranks metals based on their reactivity to determine displacement reactions.
Displacement of Metals
A more reactive metal displaces a less reactive metal from its solution.
Acids
Corrosive substances that can react with solid materials, often with a sour taste.
Strong Acids
Acids that react vigorously, such as hydrochloric acid (HCl), sulfuric acid (H2SO4), and nitric acid (HNO3).
Weak Acids
Acids that react less vigorously, such as ethanoic acid (CH3COOH) and carbonic acid (H2CO3).
Products of Metal and Acid Reaction
When a metal reacts with an acid, the products are a salt and hydrogen gas.
Pop Test
A test for hydrogen gas where a lit match produces a pop sound when it reacts with oxygen.
Sodium Reactivity
Sodium is so reactive that it can displace hydrogen from water.
